GARCIA STORIA

In 1972 in Urbania, known as 'Denim Valley', the first GARCIA jeans was made by Maurizio, husband of Isabella Garcia, who named his product after the love of his life. Ever since, we have been globally known as the fashion brand with a denim heart.

We are GARCIA. In everything we do, we start and end with denim.

Our style? We make ‘Everyday Denimwear with a Mediterranean Soul’.

CSR_desktop_4.jpg

CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility)

Our ‘Family Values- Then, Now & Forever’-program reinforces GARCIA’s commitment to do better. To minimize our environmental footprint & create great clothing for families. We know we have a lot more to do, but our journey so far has brought us positive change and great steps forward. We will continue and do better every day. That is our commitment towards the environment and towards future generations.

Allora, ora e per sempre. Then, now and forever.

Obviously, this also applies to our jeans. We are continuously seeking for opportunities to lower the environmental impact of our jeans production and have set ourselves the goal to have all our jeans be rated as less impact by 2025, by using: less water, less chemicals and less energy. Less, less, less…

LESS, LESS, LESS…

Unprocessed jeans, straight out of the factory are what we in the industry call ‘dry denim’. Denim experts say you shouldn’t wash denim too much and we couldn’t agree more. That’s why we treat most of our denim with eco-friendly ozone techniques during the wash, cutting our water usage. We also make use of a sustainable technique called laser treatment.

BETTER COTTON

Right now, not all the cotton is as conscious as we’d like it to be, which is why we’ve embraced organic cotton and the Better Cotton Initiative.

We are sourcing our cotton through the Better Cotton Initiative. BCI is an initiative that is committed worldwide to better conditions in the cotton sector.

Better Cotton is sourced via a system of Mass Balance and is not physically traceable via end products. See www.bettercotton.org/massbalance for details.

Through BCI and its Partners, farmers receive training on how to use water efficiently, care for the health of the soil and natural habitats, reduce use of the most harmful chemicals and apply decent work principles.

AS FROM 2021, 100% OF OUR DENIM COLLECTION IS MADE FROM ORGANIC OR BCI COTTON!

CSR_desktop_9-5.jpg

ORGANIC COTTON

Organic cotton offers a much better alternative than normal cotton and is processed according to the strict rules of organic farming. This means, among other things, that no synthetic pesticides are used that can harm the environment or cotton workers.

Organic cotton also means that what you get from the farm is pure cotton, without the genetically modified bits. The goal that we have set ourselves is to make 10% of our denim fabrics from organic cotton by 2025.

Now, in 2021, we can say that we already received this goal! And of course we strive to increase this percentage step by step.

SUSTAINABLE WASH

Sustainable wash is a collective name for more sustainable washes.

Jeanologia® has developed an innovative technology named EIM (Environmental Impact Measuring Software). Most of our denim suppliers use this technology. EIM brings efficient and sustainable technologies that guarantee savings of large amounts of water, energy, chemicals and worker impact by eliminating the most harmful and labor-intensive garment finishing processes. The lower the score the less impact it has. The denim industry is a very polluting and water intensive process. With every collection we try to do better by reducing our impact.

OZONE TECHNIQUES?

Ozone is a technique that replaces stone washing but still gives our denim an authentic, used-look. This technique is more eco-friendly because no chemicals and very little water are required. Our goal for 2025 is that 100% of our denim collection will be sustainably washed.

E-FLOW TECHNIQUES?

When AIR starts to replace water… E-Flow technology is the sustainable textile solution to transfer chemicals onto garments made of any fabric. Conventionally water is used as the carrier and, at the end of every cycle, that water, still brimming with chemical products, goes to waste.

Jeanologia’s disruptive solution has been to create a new system in which air from the atmosphere is transformed into nanobubbles where water and just the right quantity of chemical products naturally distribute themselves forming the nanobubble skin. They become the carriers of the chemical products and transmit them homogeneously onto the garment.

E-Flow technology can accomplish a considerable number of finishing effects with the highest quality, a minimal amount of water and zero discharge. This is why e-Flow technology is the only one certified as ecological by an independent laboratory.

CSR_desktop_12.jpg

LASER TREATMENT INSTEAD OF TRADITIONAL WASHINGS

Laser treatment is an innovative method which gives our denims a faded ‘vintage’ or ‘distressed’ look with very little environmental impact. This treatment is done with a laser that goes over our jeans and burns in them, saving not only water but energy and worker impact too. Our goal for 2025 is for 100% of our denim collection to be laser treated.

CSR_desktop_13.jpg

JACRON LABELS

Jeans traditionally have leather labels, but the leather industry has a significant impact on deforestation, animal welfare and water pollution. At Garcia, we decided to replace leather for Jacron. Made of wood pulp from FSC certified forests, Jacron looks like leather, minus all the negative effects that come with it. It’s also biodegradable, allowing it to be reabsorbed into nature, without harming the environment. Our goal was to use only Jacron labels by 2023, but we can confirm this has been done by 2021 already.

BEYOND DENIM FABRICS

Jeans are made of denim. However, a pair of jeans contains more than denim only. Metal trims, leather or paper patches, buttons… If you want to reduce the environmental impact, these are ‘ingredients’ which deserve to be checked as well.

With the help of suppliers offering us products with a reduced ecological footprint by reducing water consumption and phasing out the use of hazardous chemicals. From our metal trims to the labels on our jeans.

SUSTAINABLE METAL TRIMS

The metal trims on our jeans are made of sustainable materials. This way we save on raw materials and reduce waste at the same time. By 2021 we have already achieved that 60% of our metals are sustainable. Our goal is to have 100% sustainable metals by 2024.

CSR_desktop_14.jpg

Well, now you know a bit more about our jeans and the way we make one of the most popular kind of clothing in the world. If you got yourself a pair of our jeans (hope you enjoy them as much as possible) we assume you share our family values. But, do you know you can do some efforts to do better as well? Do you know that:

  • Jeans only need to be washed every 10 wears, preferably with an eco-friendly detergent.
  • Stains can be removed by using the sun’s rays as a natural bleaching agent.
  • If you hang clothing instead of throwing them in the dryer, will not only help to keep colours vibrant, it’ll lower your electricity bill too.
  • Hanging your clothing in the bathroom is a great way to steam out any creases while you shower.
  • Hanging your jeans upside down will save you some ironing efforts as they dry straight.
  • Delicate items should also be washed in a mesh laundry bag. This will extend the lifespan, so you don’t need to buy new items too often.
  • Wash inside out, to keep the original and worn effect, for a longer period.
  • Ever calculated the amount of water you use each time you use your machine? Approximately 75 liters! So what If you wash 2 times a week less. Imagine what you’ll save over an entire year!
CSR_desktop_15.jpg

Better washing, that's how you do it

By taking a critical look at your own washing behavior, you can reduce the environmental impact of your clothes. How do you do that? Start with your washing machine. The most economical washing machine (A+++, 76kWh) uses about 10,000 liters of water per year at 220 washes per year. Assuming use of the eco setting, wash 40℃ and 60℃.

Per wash this amounts to approximately 40-60 liters of water. For comparison: showering costs approx. 65 liters of water for approx. 9 minutes. The greatest impact of washing (approx. 80% - 90%) is caused by the temperature and thus the energy consumption of a washing machine.

If you wash your clothes at 40℃ instead of 60℃, that saves about 1/3 of energy, which you use less.

You can make even more impact by drying clothes on a clothes rack instead of putting them in your dryer. Drying a laundry in a dryer requires a lot of heat and therefore a lot of energy.

Also consider whether washing a garment is really necessary. Clothes that you wear directly on your skin, such as underwear, T-shirts and shirts, are often washed after a day's use. You can often wear sweaters, cardigans, jackets and jeans longer before they need a wash. Especially if they are made from natural materials such as cotton, hemp, wool and linen. Natural materials are less likely to retain odors than synthetic materials.

Finally: choose detergents with an ecolabel as much as possible. These detergents contain vegetable ingredients and are free from harmful chemicals such as synthetic dyes, brighteners and chlorinated bleaches.

If you do not want to wash and still want to freshen up or de-wrinkle your clothes, you can also think of a biodegradable water-based spray from, for example, DFNS.
